Is that the one with Will Smith? I heard to expect an Oscar for him.

woscar... you said "The Beach" was underrated?? LOL! That movie fucking sucks! It all goes downhill when Leo starts thinking he's going crazy. Jutting his head out of the bushes and hissing like a snake at the woman's ankle was the low point of his acting career.

No that was me. And I think your opinion is just a bit self righteous. I happen to love that movie.

Pet peeve of mine. If you want to be entertained, go watch Transformers.

The Beach is a fantastic movie, it's one of those movies that actually makes you think and has so many levels.

One of my favorite movie quotes ever:
quote:
Trust me, it's paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed. For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven't tried before. So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It's probably worth it.

I've yet to see The Beach, but I trust Danny Boyle's filmmaking.

Well look at you two frontal-lobe-heavy intellectuals. Like I can't figure out the point of the movie? LOL... I get it, believe me. Many movies with good intentions often suck, and this was one of them in my opinion.
My pet peeve is when people try to sound extra smart by invoking names like "Au Revoir Les Enfants" and other obscure art house indies that they know nobody has really seen, and try to show off like they're part of Cannes film festival underground. "You're not up to speed on Louis Malle's catalogue? HAHAHA go back to your cave, culture-less heathen!"

on that note, i second City of God; Irreversible was very well done but was also a very uncomfortable movie to see with my mother; Y Tu Mama, Tambien, Requiem for a Dream, and for when it finally arrives on video: Berlin Calling. i like foreign films that make you read.

This defeats the purpose of a movie. A movie is made to be watched. /end

Yep. The need to read a movie takes away from both the nuances of the film, the shooting style, etc. You can't pay attention to the words and fully understand what is going on in the scene.
Also, I really have an absolute disdain for movies that are translated. When I watched both Das Boot and Lola Rennt in either English or with subtitles, they were great examples of why it just doesn't work very well. You can't get the right inflection, gravity, etc with what they are saying.

revolver and rocknrolla if you love british gangster movies.

Are you arguing that movies shouldn't be watched in anything but their native language? Neither subtitled or dubbed? If so, obviously it's ideal to get as close to the original as possible, but isn't watching it translated and getting most of the meaning better than none at all? I think so.
